Trailer for Scorsese’s Shutter Island

June 10, 2009

Director Martin Scorsese hopes to continue his successful collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio in their new film Shutter Island.  The psychological thriller follows Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio), a US Marshal investigating the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane located on a remote island.

Shutter Island is based off the novel of the same name by author Dennis Lehane.  In my opinion, Martin Scorsese has never made an uninteresting film; However, this is the first time Scorsese has tackled something with supernatural overtones, so I’m interested to see what his take will be. I’m not the biggest DiCaprio fan, but he’s made some cool films with Scorsese, so I’m looking forward to this one.

Thanks to Craig for the heads up.

Like Will, I’ve never been completely sold on DiCaprio as an actor. He’s not bad, but he’s not great either. That being said, this seems like quite a departure for Scorsese (who also has always been a bit hit and miss with me). I think having a director step out of their usual style and content to take on this kind of material can often produce the best kind of film. I’m looking forward to it.

Scorsese just loves DiCaprio for some reason… I honestly don’t get it.

If you compare it to other long director/actor collaborations of the past; Pacino and Coppola, Scorsese and DeNiro, Kurosawa and Mifune, Huston and Bogart… it just won’t stand the test of time. I just see another lost opportunity for a more talented actor to work with Scorsese every time he casts DiCaprio.

Scorsese can direct, but DiCaprio still hasn’t sold me. Prove me wrong Leo, prove me wrong!

Well if you believe in the Oscars being any kind of gauge for success, they are 3/3 in best pictures noms for their collaborations. I think they’re pretty solid for the most part, but Scorsese has lost a certain something he used to have in most of his work.

His movies just lack the intensity they used to have. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still an amazing director, but his earlier films just have a raw feeling to them; movies like Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas. I’d say the last film he made that had that feeling for me was Bringing Out the Dead. Ever since, his films have just felt overproduced.

But hey, if that’s the kind of movie he wants to make these days… more power to him.
