The key is when you said "he's not making a high fantasy film."

This is the problem fantasy has traveling to the screen. It is either ridiculously complex and so serious as to be mockable by viewers not already immersed in the realm of the story, or it becomes a tongue-in-cheek popcorn flick that reminds of the Sinbad TV show. This is a tough dichotomy. Very few shows or movies have done it well and as thus very few fantasy works properly transcend the mediums.

I don't know anything about the Solomon Kane world or stories, but I can easily imagine the movie being a) too silly and popcorn for the fanbase, or b) too plodding, confusing, and serious for the populace, and missing that fine line in between. Because almost all fantasy works I've seen put to tape fall into either of the categories.

As a huge fantasy fan myself, this sucks!
I'm praying for A Song of Ice and Fire.

Rick, I take it that you're a fan of the Solomon Kane stories? The review is just my opinion of what I saw, as I stated I was not previously familiar with the Kane character or his universe.

If you're bashing the film based on a script you've read, or my review... Maybe you should consider seeing the movie for yourself. Clearly, I'm not going to convince you either way.

Like I said, it's not a great movie. Solomon Kane is mediocre at best... but the world is interesting and the character could go interesting places. This film was mildly entertaining, if a sequel happens, I'll see it. If only because I believe things can only improve from here.

"I know Solomon Kane is a bad ass who kills evil people, I knew that before I even saw the movie"

No. No you don't know half of it.

Wow. A director and a reviewer without a clue. when this is what passes for a review it only makes sense that Solomon Kane was made the way it was, and that was poorly as contrived nonsense, at least based on the script.

"For a character meant to be grounded in pulp mythology, Bassett plays it a little too straight at times."

Perhaps because Robert E. Howard also took his characters seriously. There's very little humor in the Solomon Kane Tales. Methinks it would be disrespectful to Howard & his creation NOT to play it straight.
