Avatar Theatrical Trailer

October 29, 2009

Update: The Yahoo Movies link won’t work for our Canadian readers, but we’ve embedded the video here for your viewing pleasure.

Yahoo Movies has posted the full theatrical trailer for James Cameron‘s upcoming 3D sci-fi adventure Avatar.  Not convinced by that first teaser trailer?  The new trailer offers an expanded look at Cameron’s new film, finally shedding some details on the plot.  Fox also finally advertises the fact that Titanic is not Cameron’s only movie, that he’s actually directed a few other films including Terminator, Aliens and True Lies.

I still think Avatar looks like Dances with Wolves in space, but this trailer sells me on the film a little more.  Be sure to check out our reaction to the 15 minute Avatar preview that hit theatres in August.

Avatar arrives in theatres on December 18th.

This makes it look even more like Dances with Wolves in Space to me. However, the story looks just strong enough that I would see it.

Fox sure isn’t screwing around with the marketing for Avatar though. The trailer is so straight forward it hurts, right down to the generic trailer music. It managers to cover the major plot points, all while bragging about James Cameron’s CV to date.

They gave Cameron free reign and however many hundreds of millions of dollars to make the film, now they’re trying to make Avatar as accessible to the masses as possible.

From a visual stand point I’m sure the film will be impressive, I was pretty blown away by what I saw. Story-wise… it’ll be derivative, as most of Cameron’s stuff is in one way or another.

As trailers go, it’s pretty average… and that’s the intention. Given the money they spent on the film I wouldn’t expect the marketing folks at Fox to take any risks.

It’s looks a lot like Fern Gully and Halo.
