Netflix has conscripted Brad Pitt, a veteran of numerous fictional tours of duty, in the streaming service’s war on movie theatres. Pitt plays four-star General Glenn McMahon in War Machine, an absurdist war story about the Afghanistan war directed by David Michôd (Animal Kingdom, The Rover). Part parody, part non-fiction, the feature film is Netflix’s latest in a series of efforts to shake the streaming stigma and get people to stay home on movie night.
Inspired by the book The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan, written by the late Michael Hastings, War Machine once again sees Netflix showing off its formidable regiment of stars. Ben Kingsley, Anthony Michael Hall, Scoot McNairy, Tilda Swinton and more will join Pitt as invades living rooms everywhere May 26.
