Team Fortress 2 is Now Free To Play!

June 24, 2011

Everyone’s favourite “war-themed hat simulator,” Team Fortress 2, released its “Uber Update” yesterday. Aside from bringing a lot of improvements and additions to the 2007 first person shooter, the game’s developers have announced that it will shift to a free-to-play model which is driven by micro-transactions.

The game has seen a decided shift in the tone since the September 2010 “Mann-Conomy” update, which allowed users to purchase in-game items that had previously only been attainable by random drops or item crafting. The model must have been successful, as jumping to an entirely micro-transaction-based model is no small change.

Developer Valve also released another one of its “Meet The Class” videos, this time focusing on the Medic. As always, it’s amazing to see what those guys can cook up with a little bit of creativity and a whole lot of time at the machinima board. You can view the video below!

The North American Starcraft League

By Joel Minty
June 23, 2011

In South Korea, Starcraft players have attained levels of prestige the equivalent of North American sports stars, including six-figure incomes, hordes or fans and recognition on the street. Real-time strategy has become a sport unto itself: a digital chess match that requires intense clicks-per-second and incredible observational skills. Tournament after tournament presents players going head-to-head – for cash. The prestige in North America is nonexistent by comparison, the money less and the fanbase not ready to making gaming more than a casual pastime. The North American Star League is trying to change that. Continue reading

It’s no secret that Canadians love some home-grown talent; this includes Kill Shakespeare, a graphic novel that I described to my roommate this morning as “Shakespeare crossover fan-fiction that’s actually good.” On Monday, the team announced on Twitter that Astral Media have awarded Kill Shakespeare, among others, money to produce a screenplay. First Image of Hugo Weaving as The Red Skull

March 3, 2011

Ladies and gentleman, I give you Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull from Captain America: The First Avenger. I’m guessing this is a late-in-the-movie uniform, as there’s no Nazi symbology. This kind of disappoints me in a weird way; I mean, being a Nazi just adds another level of evil to The Red Skull, don’t you think? Continue reading
