The Muppets Trailer

May 26, 2011

I am a child of The Muppets. I grew up on Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, and the latter was one of the first shows I remember watching as a child and being introduced to a quasi-adult humor. Funny to all age groups, and yet slightly sardonic, ironic, and weird enough that I’m positive it lead me into my love of all films and books strange and wonderfully weird. Although Disney seems to have a financial lock on the characters and their escapades, the fact that original muppeteers such as Frank Oz, and Jim Henson’s son Brian, are still at the helm means that the new film should be keeping in the original spirit of the brilliant series and early films. The script is written by Jason Segel, a solid actor and singer despite some questionable film choices, and also stars Amy Adams, who I maintain is an amazing talent.

And we have not one, but two trailers. And in keeping with the crazy spirit, both are parodies of a typical Hollywood rom-com and a recent bland sequel. I’m not exactly sure what the logic behind disguising them under names other than the film title is, but all that matters if that they’re out there. So stick with them, and I suspect if you aren’t already, you will be seduced into the wild and magical world of Kermit and his insane friends.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Review

May 20, 2011

I cannot give a film a pass simply because it is fun to watch. There are plenty of really bad films that are fun to watch, but that doesn’t make them good films. Which is why to some degree it pains me to give the latest entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise a modestly negative review. It almost gets everything I like about the series right, but once you leave the theatre it will dawn on you that what you just saw wasn’t all that great. Continue reading

Sigil #1 Review

March 12, 2011

I enjoyed Sigil #1, but having never read the original series – published by CrossGen from 2000 to 2003 – I found the comic’s plot a bit thin and somewhat confusing. Still, Leonard Kirk’s attention-grabbing artistic style more than made up this, and has me eagerly awaiting issue #2. Continue reading

Epic Mickey Review

December 22, 2010

Warren Spector’s crack at the Mickey mythos is as interesting as it is weird in his anticipated and ambitious take on the mouse, Epic Mickey. It’s a strange direction for both the cherished cartoon and the respected designer, but it’s clear that the two forces have found a comfortable middle ground for creation. Be that as it may, is Epic Mickey as successful as its starry eyes wish for? Continue reading

TRON: Legacy Review

December 17, 2010

I didn’t really have any lofty hopes for TRON: Legacy. My generation missed the bandwagon for sci-fi action adventure movies that dominated theatres in the late 70s and early 80s. I was unburdened by childhood nostalgia, the only thing that had skewed my expectations about the film was the monstrous marketing campaign that Disney employed. This sequel – that nobody ever really asked for – is worth seeing, but only if you plan to watch it in 3D in a giant theatre with a killer sound system. Continue reading

Interview
TRON: Evolution
Art Director David Patch

December 7, 2010

The 1982 original TRON film evokes some very specific imagery. Recognizer tanks zooming by in defiance of the laws of aerodynamics, lightcycles racing through the city leaving behind light trails, and above all else neon reds and blues crisscrossing against a sleek digital world. These still form the basis of the re-imagined world spearheaded by the film TRON: Legacy, but as we found out, the tie-in video game TRON: Evolution goes a bit further. Continue reading

Like the previous trailers for the film this one is a visual treat, but what makes this one different is that it finally reveals the plot of the film. TRON: Legacy stars Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn — son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) from the 1982 TRON — who must travel to the digital world to find his father who has been missing for 25 years.
