Bethesda Softworks has announced that their new Fallout game is set for release this Fall. Announced last year, Fallout: New Vegas is not Fallout 4, but is more of a spin-off and direct sequel to 1998’s Fallout 2. Bethesda also released a teaser trailer for the game to coincide with their announcement.
New Vegas is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, best known for developing the NeverWinter Nights series and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. Obsidian was formed shortly after Interplay’s Black Isle Studios (the developers of Fallout and Fallout 2) shut down. Many of the key players from Black Isle ended up at Obsidian, so hopefully Fallout: New Vegas can recapture some of the heavily-irradiated magic that made the first two games in the franchise so great.
An abandoned air base outside of Leningrad, Russia played host to more than 300 Russian Fallout fans last month. The live-action role players recreated post-apocalyptic world of the 1998 Black Isle video game Fallout 2, complete with Brotherhood of Steel Knights, ghouls and even an issue of Cat’s Paw Magazine.
The time and effort these fans put into creating their costumes and props is absolutely astonishing. I have often derided LARPing in the past —and for good reason— but since I’m a huge fan of the Fallout series I can safely say that this looks like fun.
The site is in Russian, but you can check out some more amazing pictures here.
Broken Steel, the third downloadable content pack for Bethesda Softworks immensely popular Fallout 3 will be released on May 5th. The nature of Fallout 3’s original ending, meant that players were not able to keep playing after the completion of the main quest, a fact that irked many. Bethesda recognized this shortcoming and as a result Broken Steel will continue the main storyline after ending of the game as the player and the Brotherhood of Steel seek to finish off the remnants of the Enclave once and for all. The Broken Steel DLC raises the level cap to 30 and will also feature new quests, characters, enemies, weapons and locations.
Beware: trailer may contain spoilers if you have not completed Fallout 3.
If the previous downloadable content for Fallout 3; The Pitt and Operation Anchorage, is any indication Broken Steel will be a lot of fun and add hours of gameplay.
Developer Obsidian Entertainment has posted a walkthrough for their new game Alpha Protocol, a real-world espionage role-playing game.
Although still early in development, Alpha Protocol is starting to look a little bit like a real-world version of Mass Effect, with more of a focus on the role-playing aspects. It’s refreshing to see an RPG that doesn’t involve swords and magic or sci-fi weaponry. Obsidian Entertainment are the developer responsible for Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2 and the upcoming Fallout: New Vegas. Prior to the formation of Obsidian, most of the main staff worked at Interplay’s now defunct Black Isle Studios, working on games like Fallout and Fallout 2. Given Obsidian’s pedigree, I think Alpha Protocol is a game to watch.
Bethesda Softworks has just announced that a new Fallout game is on the way for 2010. Fallout: New Vegas will be developed by Obsidian Entertainment, best known for the NeverWinter Nights series and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. According to Bethesda’s Todd HowardFallout: New Vegas will not be a sequel to Fallout 3, but will instead merely be set in the Fallout universe.
It sounds to me like this could more likely be some kind of sequel to the story of Fallout and Fallout 2. This is amazing news for fans of the original Fallout games, Obsidian Entertainment formed after the dissolution of Interplay’s Black Isle Studios, the developers of Fallout and Fallout 2. Many of the same designers who worked on those games—Feargus Urquhart, Chris Jones and Chris Avellone to name a few—ultimately went on to form Obsidian. I am really excited to see these guys back in the radiated, mutant-filled Fallout sandbox.
