Captain America: The First Avenger Trailer

March 25, 2011

Captain America: The First Avenger - Chris Evans

The first full length trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger has hit the web. The Marvel Comics adaptation is being directed by Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, The Wolfman) and stars Chris Evans as the titular super soldier.

For those unfamiliar with the Captain America character, here is a basic run down of what you need to know: Evans plays Steve Rogers, a 90 pound weakling desperate to serve his country during the Second World War. Rejected for military service due to his small stature, Rogers gets a chance to serve when he is selected to take part in a top secret project that is attempting to create the ultimate soldier. Transformed into Captain America, he becomes the pinnacle of human strength and perfection; the greatest weapon in the allies’ arsenal.

Something, something, cosmic cube and the Red Skull, something, something, punching Hitler in the face – the details aren’t what’s important here, all you really need to know is that Captain America and his cohorts will be kicking Nazi ass and taking names. The film looks to have that same pulpy action adventure feel that the director honed on such films as The Rocketeer. They could have easily gone the gritty Band of Brothers route with this film, but Johnston seems to be keeping things light and action packed, which is fine by me.

The film also stars Hugo Weaving, Stanley Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones, Dominic Cooper and Haley Atwell.

Captain America: The First Avenger blasts into theatres on July 22, 2011.

Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates #2 Review

March 23, 2011

Mark Millar is back in perfect writing form with this latest issue of Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates. Returning to the Marvel Universe he was instrumental in shaping, Millar had the daunting task of trying to salvage the wreck that his once-great masterpiece had become under Jeph Loeb’s direction. And while the first two Ultimate Avenger titles were a good start, the third one left me cold. Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates #2 though, is Millar at his best. Continue reading

Retro Comic Review: Marvel Premiere #10

March 22, 2011

Last week two DLC characters for Marvel vs Capcom 3 were released. From the Capcom side was Resident Evil’s Jill Valentine, who’s been having trouble with mind-controlling parasites lately. On the Marvel side is Shuma-Gorath, a sassy one-eyed tentacled monster who few people who work at Marvel Comics, let alone read them, have ever heard of. Except for a handful of encounters with Dr. Strange and the Fantastic Four in the 1970s and 80s, he barely exists at all. Continue reading

Captain America & the First Thirteen Review

March 12, 2011

With every comic book movie adaptation, there is a flood of new titles that showcase the soon-to-be silver screen hero. Captain America: The First Avenger will be no different, and in addition to the regular on-going series, this week saw the arrival of three different comics with the star-spangled hero headlining. Continue reading

Sigil #1 Review

March 12, 2011

I enjoyed Sigil #1, but having never read the original series – published by CrossGen from 2000 to 2003 – I found the comic’s plot a bit thin and somewhat confusing. Still, Leonard Kirk’s attention-grabbing artistic style more than made up this, and has me eagerly awaiting issue #2. Continue reading

5 Ronin #1 Review

March 5, 2011

5 Ronin is a new mini-series, being released in weekly succession, which reinvents five of Marvel’s most popular characters in 17th century Japan. This is an out-of-continuity tale, in the same vein as DC’s Elseworlds line, or Marvel’s 1602. Continue reading

First Image of Hugo Weaving as The Red Skull

March 3, 2011

Ladies and gentleman, I give you Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull from Captain America: The First Avenger. I’m guessing this is a late-in-the-movie uniform, as there’s no Nazi symbology. This kind of disappoints me in a weird way; I mean, being a Nazi just adds another level of evil to The Red Skull, don’t you think? Continue reading

Fantastic Four #588 Review

February 25, 2011

Fantastic Four #588 is emotionally powerful, visually gripping, and a definite must read. Dealing with the aftermath of the Human Torch’s death, this heart wrenching tale is everything the last issue wasn’t for me. With no dialogue until the final page, the story still conveys so much about these characters and their supporting cast. Plus, it has the best Hulk versus The Thing battle ever. You have to read to find out why! Continue reading

Amazing Spider-Man #654.1 Review

February 18, 2011

This is the best Amazing Spider-Man issue I have read in the last four years. In my youth, I was a Spider-Man fan, but upon returning to the comic years later, I soon encountered the “One More Day” arc — the story that featured the ending of Peter Parker’s marriage to Mary Jane Watson. I hated it. Since then, there have been few good Spidey plot lines, due mostly to revolving creative teams, stinker new villains, and marketing/publicity-driven storylines. Amazing Spider-Man #654.1 changes all that. Continue reading

New Thor Trailer Arrives

February 17, 2011

A new trailer for the live action adaptation of the Marvel Comics superhero Thor has hit the web. The Kenneth Branagh directed action epic stars Chris Hemsworth as the titular Norse god, robbed of his power and cast down to Earth by his father Odin. The film also stars Anthony Hopkins as Odin, and Natalie Portman as his love interest, Jane Foster. Continue reading

Silver Surfer #1 Review

February 17, 2011

Greg Pak seems to have a strange talent for making me care for characters that I previously could not. He did it with Bruce Banner in Planet Hulk, and he does it again each and every time I pick up his books. His work on Hulk and Incredible Hercules is impeccable, and when I picked up the first issue of the new Silver Surfer mini-series, I hoped that magic would happen again. Continue reading

There’s a lot of fighting fans and fighting games out there, and with plenty of changes, additions, subtractions and super-hyper-ultra-actions in this latest iteration of the Marvel vs. Capcom series, it’s important to find out if you’re one of those fans who will enjoy it. If you’re one of those lucky few who do, you will have amazing, fantastic and astonishing times. Continue reading
