After releasing the theatrical trailer for J. J. Abrams’ new film Super 8 on Twitter last Friday, Paramount finally released the high definition version to the rest of the web today. Details about the Steven Spielberg produced film remain scarce, but judging by this new trailer we’d say that Super 8 looks like some strange amalgam of Stand By Me, The Goonies and War of the Worlds.

ZD YouTube FLV Player

The involvement of Spielberg’s production company Amblin Entertainment, which produced such classics as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Gremlins and Back to the Future, plus the late 1970s setting, adds to the classic blockbuster feel the trailer exudes. Super 8 looks to be Abrams take on this particular era of filmmaking. This reminds us of the kind of film we watched growing up, which has us both excited and a little worried.

What do you think of the new Super 8 trailer?

Super 8 comes to a cinema near you June 10, 2011.
